Garb

Garb is a crocheted spatiotemporal soft sculpture that revolves around the destruction and re-creation of old fabrics from my closet. Process-oriented, I document myself perform repetitive actions such as cutting, tying, crocheting, and knotting.

The passing of time is an important feature in the artwork. Time is embodied through my materials; the initial condition of my clothes varies from untouched or in decay. Time is also conveyed through the cycle each material goes through, taking new shapes and adding to the growth of the sculpture.

Whilst Garb develops, abjection emerges as the subject and object bleed together. With this mending, the additional themes of body vs. identity take shape. Garb, resembling a lumpy human form, relies on the fabric to acquire human characteristics. It smells of the body and has hair embedded between its folds, both purposefully in clumps and accidentally in strands. The fabrics also give the sculpture an identity due to the social context of logos, visible in the form of tags, embroidery, and waistbands.

Repurposing my past materials allows me to shed my skin, leaving behind a piece of myself on display. However, this process is never-ending, as over time my skin will shed once again. Garb has no absolute conclusion, as I continue to live, it too will grow.
